Scam and Spam: What Call Handling Can and Cannot Do
Anyone promising to eliminate spam or prevent fraud is overstating what is possible. Here is what is actually true.
A concierge reduces the interruption nuisance callers cause, because a caller has to get past something that asks who they are and why they are calling, and most do not stay on the line. It does not eliminate spam, prevent fraud, or confirm that a caller is who they claim to be. That is the honest boundary, and it is worth being precise about.
What actually happens to a nuisance call
Automated diallers generally do not engage with a question. A human running a script often will, briefly, and then move on when the concierge keeps asking for specifics. What survives that is a caller who is willing to state a name and a reason — which is a much smaller set, and one you get to review rather than field live.
Why nobody can promise elimination
Spam is not a fixed list. Numbers are cheap and disposable, caller ID can be manipulated, and the people making these calls adapt faster than any blocklist updates. A service that promises to eliminate spam is making a claim about other people’s future behaviour that it cannot control.
Fraud is a different problem entirely
A scam call succeeds by being persuasive, not by being unrecognised. A caller who claims to be your bank and gives a plausible reason will pass any filter that works by asking questions — including this one. A concierge protects your attention. It does not protect your judgement, and it is not a substitute for the ordinary caution you would apply if you had answered yourself.
